The Boat

Setka A

The boat for this project is a Setka A, a small offshore-capable sailboat designed by Janusz Maderski.

The Setka A is designed specifically for single-handed ocean sailing. With a length of just five metres and a beam of 2.2 metres, it sits at the smallest end of boats intended for transatlantic crossings, while still providing the stability, strength, and load-carrying ability required offshore.

Design Philosophy

The design focuses on simplicity and robustness rather than complexity or performance at all costs. Construction is based on straightforward materials and techniques, making the boat accessible to amateur builders while remaining structurally sound.

The hull shape, ballast configuration, and rig are optimised for reliability, self-righting capability, and manageable handling by a single sailor. Comfort is minimal by design, with the emphasis placed firmly on safety, seaworthiness, and practicality.

A Boat Built to Be Used

The Setka A is not intended as a coastal cruiser or a high-performance racer. It is designed as a small but serious offshore boat, capable of being sailed long distances by a single skipper who is prepared to accept simplicity in exchange for robustness and clarity of purpose.

For this project, the size and philosophy of the Setka A are a good match. The boat can be built in a small workshop, transported over land, and sailed in a variety of conditions during the preparation phase, before being taken offshore.
